EUROPEAN REGULATION
eIDAS 2.0.
eIDAS 2.0 – the next frontier for digital identity in Europe.
With eIDAS 2.0 entering into force, all EU member states will be mandated to provide their citizens with access to digital identity wallets within 12 months following the release of eIDAS 2.0.
In June 2021, the EU Commission presented a draft of the eIDAS 2.0 regulations and with that, a plan for a European digital identity wallet standard. The goal is to create a pan-European and most importantly, an interoperable ecosystem.
With eIDAS 2.0, the European Commission aims to expand the basic digital identity and enable their citizens to not only identify themselves but also to digitize and store identity documents and further information, such as driver licenses and tax information. As a result, digital identity wallets could serve as catalyst for the digitalization of many industries.
